Kiana Mata, of Armuchee, won second place in the 2017 Manufacturing Appreciation Week (MAW) statewide student design contest in the ninth through twelfth grade category.

Manufacturer’s Appreciation Week, established in order to promote awareness of manufacturing and its significance to the state of Georgia, took place this week Monday, April 24, through Friday, April 28, at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta.

Mata, a senior at Armuchee High School, received a $300 scholarship check presented by Gov. Nathan Deal at the MAW awards luncheon held on Thursday, April 27. Students from around the state submitted design entries featuring Georgia manufacturers and their products.

The week-long celebration was established by the (TCSG) and the Georgia Department of Economic Development. It focuses on the number and types of jobs manufacturing employs and how vital those jobs are to Georgia’s economy.

Every year, each TCSG college nominates manufacturing businesses to be honored for their contributions to Georgia’s prosperity and their local communities. 

Companies are nominated based on three categories; large business (more than 500 employees), medium business (151-500 employees), and small business (150 or fewer employees). Each nominee was measured on its economic impact on Georgia, workforce excellence, and demonstration of corporate responsibility.

This year, 甜瓜app nominated Mohawk Industries for large manufacturer of the year; Racemark and Propex were both nominated by 甜瓜app in the medium business category.

This was the 23rd year celebrating Manufacturing Appreciation Week in Georgia. This year’s sponsors included The Georgia Association of Manufacturers, The Georgia Manufacturing Extension Partnership with the Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia Power, and HA+W | Aprio. Other exhibitors at the luncheon included APICS – The Association for Operations Management, Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Georgia’s Center of Innovation for Manufacturing, the Georgia Department of Labor, the Georgia Employers Association, the Georgia Manufacturing Alliance, Georgia Trend, Next Generation Manufacturing, and the Technology Association of Georgia Manufacturing Society.
